The Higher Self

Spirit Wisdom Academy Library · Book Four — Awareness, Consciousness, and the Architecture of Experience · Chapter 3

Few spiritual terms are used as widely—or defined in as many different ways—as the Higher Self. It may be described as a wiser personality, an inner guide, the voice of intuition, a future enlightened self, or something reached through meditation. Here, the term has a more precise function. The Higher Self is essence differentiated as individual spiritual identity. It is the spiritual identity through which an incarnational expression becomes localized without becoming separate from essence itself. The Higher Self does not replace human identity. It does not hover above it. It is not another Spirit individual communicating with it. And it does not become more or less present according to a person's spiritual condition. The Higher Self makes individual spiritual identity possible. The human consciousness field makes embodied life possible within that localized expression. Human identity interprets the life being lived. The question is therefore no longer: How do I reach my Higher Self? It becomes: What changes when I understand that I already am it?

Book Four: Awareness, Consciousness, and the Architecture of Experience

A Common Question

What is the Higher Self?

Answer

The Higher Self is essence differentiated as individual spiritual identity.

That definition is intentionally precise.

It does not mean a more spiritually advanced personality.

It does not mean the best version of the human being.

It does not mean intuition itself.

It does not mean a Spirit guide.

It does not mean the Oversoul.

And it does not refer to a special condition of consciousness reached through spiritual practice.

The Higher Self is spiritual individuality.

It allows essence to be expressed as a distinct identity without requiring essence itself to divide into separate substances.

Introduction

“Higher” Does Not Mean Better

Human language easily turns position into rank.

If something is called higher, something else appears lower.

The Higher Self can therefore be imagined as pure while the human is impure.

Wise while the human is confused.

Spiritual while the human is ordinary.

Real while personality is somehow false.

That is not what higher means here.

The word refers to architectural scope.

The Higher Self is not confined to the interpretive perspective of the human identity created for one incarnation.

That does not make it more worthy.

Grief, anger, uncertainty, contradiction, and ordinary human complexity do not diminish spiritual identity.

The incarnation was not created so that the human could spend its life attempting to escape being human.

Individuality Does Not Begin With Personality

Human individuality is easy to see.

A person has a name, body, history, temperament, language, memory, preferences, circumstances, and a network of people who have mattered to them.

These make one human life unmistakably different from another.

But they do not explain the origin of spiritual individuality.

The Higher Self describes the individual spiritual identity from which an incarnation is localized.

It is not an anonymous portion of universal consciousness.

Nor is it simply the human personality extended beyond physical death.

Personality expresses individuality within incarnation.

It does not create the individuality from which the incarnation arose.

The Higher Self Is Not Another Spirit Individual

When someone says:

“My guide told me…”

the grammar describes two individuals in relationship.

When someone says:

“My Higher Self told me…”

the words appear to describe the same arrangement.

One being here.

Another there.

But those situations are fundamentally different.

A Spirit communicator remains another spiritual individual.

The Higher Self is the spiritual identity whose incarnation is being experienced.

Why, then, is such an identity necessary at all?
