Spirit Communication
Spirit communication is a relationship between a person in Spirit and a medium. Rather than requiring dramatic voices, visions, or extraordinary states, communication often becomes apparent through familiar human experience—thought, imagery, feeling, sensation, memory, and knowing. This chapter introduces the first foundation of mediumship: learning to notice what is present before rushing to explain it.
Book One: Foundations of Mediumship
A Common Question
What is Spirit communication?
Answer
Spirit communication is a relationship in which a Spirit communicator and a medium participate in the unfolding of meaning.
The communicator is not simply sending information into a passive receiver, and the medium does not disappear from the process. The medium remains present, responsive, and involved as communication becomes apparent through familiar forms of human experience.
Development begins not by forcing something to happen, but by becoming more familiar with how that relationship is experienced.
Introduction
Ask ten people what Spirit communication is and you may receive ten very different answers.
Some imagine hearing a voice.
Others imagine seeing someone standing before them.
Some expect unmistakable visions, powerful sensations, or an experience so extraordinary that doubt becomes impossible.
Experiences like these can occur.
But beginning with them can create a problem.
The student starts searching for what they believe communication should look like instead of noticing how communication is actually presenting itself.
Spirit communication is often far more ordinary in appearance than people expect.
A thought appears.
An image forms.
A feeling becomes present.
A memory arises unexpectedly.
A word or name seems to arrive without deliberate effort.
A simple understanding is suddenly there.
None of these experiences, by themselves, establishes that Spirit is communicating.
But neither should they automatically be dismissed simply because they feel familiar.
The first lesson of mediumship is therefore not:
“How do I make Spirit communicate with me?”
It begins with a simpler question:
What is actually happening here?
That question changes the position of the student.
Instead of searching for an extraordinary experience, we begin by paying closer attention to the experience that is already present.
And from there, relationship becomes possible.
