From Evidence to Individuality
Establishing who is being represented is only one part of evidential communication. Once identity has sufficient support, another question becomes possible: Who was this person? A collection of facts may identify someone without revealing much about the life they lived. Greater depth develops when supported information begins showing how occupation, relationships, behavior, priorities, experiences, and choices belonged to the same individual. This does not mean constructing a personality from clues or turning separate details into a story. It means allowing information that genuinely relates to illuminate more of the person while leaving unsupported connections alone. This chapter explores how evidence can move beyond identification toward individuality without asking the medium to invent what the evidence itself has not established.

A Common Question
What is the difference between identifying a Spirit communicator and revealing their individuality?
Answer
Identification concerns whether the available evidence sufficiently supports one person rather than other reasonable possibilities.
Individuality concerns what the supported information allows us to understand about the person who has been identified.
A name may help establish who someone is.
An occupation may add another fact.
But greater dimensionality can emerge when information begins showing:
how that person worked,
how they behaved within relationships,
what repeatedly mattered to them,
how particular experiences shaped the context of their life,
or how different aspects of the same person appeared in different settings.
The medium does not create those relationships.
They remain accountable to what the evidence actually supports.
Introduction
There is a point in evidential mediumship when the central question begins to change.
At first, the concern is:
Who does this information support?
Once one individual has been sufficiently established, the communication can begin asking something different:
Who was this person?
Those are not the same evidential task.
A recipient may recognize:
a mother,
an uncle,
a close friend,
or a former partner
quite early.
But knowing the relationship does not necessarily tell us much about the life within it.
A person is more than their position in someone else's family.
More than their occupation.
More than their appearance.
More than the events that happened to them.
Individuality begins to emerge as supported details reveal dimensions of the life that belonged together.
Identification and Individuality Are Different Questions
Suppose the evidence strongly establishes a woman as the recipient's aunt.
That answers:
Who?
Further information might show that she:
ran a small clothing-alteration business,
rarely discarded usable fabric,
made costumes for local theater productions,
and spent many evenings sewing with one particular niece.
Now the evidence is no longer merely identifying an aunt.
It is beginning to reveal a person.
Her work.
Her habits.
Her interests.
Her relationships.
The distinction matters.
Identification locates the individual.
Individuality gives dimension to the life.
Depth and Quantity Are Not the Same Thing
Ten disconnected facts may identify someone very effectively.
They do not necessarily reveal much about who that person was.
A name.
A town.
A birthday month.
A vehicle.
A sibling.
A holiday destination.
All may be correct.
But depth is not created simply by increasing the inventory.
Sometimes three pieces that illuminate one another reveal considerably more.
The question is no longer:
How many facts are present?
It becomes:
What do these supported details allow us to understand about this person's life?
