Strengthening Your Relationship with Spirit
Mediumship is relationship with another individual in Spirit. Strengthening that relationship does not mean Spirit moves closer, the medium gains greater spiritual access, or communication becomes authentic simply because it feels more familiar. What can change is the quality of human participation within the relationship. This chapter explores what that means: how familiarity, listening, responsiveness, and participation can support relationship without turning Spirit into something the medium controls, possesses, or absorbs.

How do I become closer to Spirit?
Answer
You do not need to think of Spirit as traveling closer to you.
The language of closeness may describe how a relationship feels, but mediumship is not dependent upon reducing a spiritual distance.
What can change is your participation.
You may become less occupied by novelty, more able to listen, more responsive to what becomes available through the relationship, and less inclined to replace relationship with expectation or control.
A stronger relationship is therefore not greater possession of Spirit.
It is more relational participation.
Introduction
The phrase “strengthening your relationship with Spirit” can sound simple.
Most of us already understand what it means for a human relationship to become stronger.
People become familiar.
They listen.
They share experience.
They learn one another's ways.
The relationship begins to carry history.
So it is natural to bring similar language into mediumship.
But there is an important question beneath it.
What exactly is becoming stronger?
Is Spirit moving nearer?
Is the medium becoming more spiritually powerful?
Does communication become more genuine because it feels familiar?
Does a stronger relationship mean the medium can reach Spirit more easily?
These assumptions can enter almost unnoticed.
The Academy approaches the question differently.
Mediumship is relationship with another individual in Spirit.
The Spirit communicator remains an individual.
The medium remains humanly involved.
Neither participant disappears.
And relationship cannot be manufactured by technique simply because the medium wants it to become stronger.
What can change is how the human participant enters the relationship.
Less pressure to produce.
Less need to control the form.
Greater willingness to listen.
Greater familiarity with participation itself.
More accurate observation of what is actually occurring.
That is where strengthening becomes meaningful.
Do not chase connection.
Cultivate relationship.
