From Practice to Service

Spirit Wisdom Academy Library · Book Two — Early Mediumship Development · Chapter 10

There is a meaningful difference between practicing mediumship and offering a sitting to another person. During practice, mistakes, uncertainty, and experimentation primarily belong to the student’s development. Once someone comes to receive a sitting, the same words can carry a different weight. The person may be grieving, searching for understanding, or simply willing to place trust in the mediumistic process. Service therefore introduces something new: responsibility for how the human expression of mediumship may affect another person. This chapter explores readiness, compassion, boundaries, integrity, recipient autonomy, and the distinction between caring for someone and assuming authority over what their experience should mean.

Book Two: Early Mediumship Development

A Common Question

When am I ready to begin serving others through my mediumship?

Answer

Readiness does not require perfection.

It does require more than wanting to help.

Before offering a sitting as service, a developing medium should be able to work without needing the recipient to confirm their worth, acknowledge uncertainty honestly, accept when information does not connect, refrain from manufacturing an outcome, maintain appropriate boundaries, and understand that good intentions do not make every claim responsible.

The question is not whether you will ever make a mistake.

It is whether another person can enter the experience without being made responsible for your development.

Introduction

There comes a point when practice changes context.

Until then, much of the work has centered on the student.

What happens when an impression appears?

Where does interpretation enter?

What happens under pressure?

Can uncertainty be spoken?

How does feedback affect expression?

These are appropriate developmental questions.

Then another person arrives not primarily to help you practice, but to receive something from the sitting.

That changes the work.

The words spoken may matter beyond the exercise.

A statement may touch grief.

An interpretation may influence how someone understands a relationship.

A confident claim may be remembered long after the medium has forgotten making it.

The medium is still developing.

Still capable of uncertainty.

Still capable of error.

But another human being is now affected by how that development is expressed.

This is the threshold from practice to service.

It is not a graduation.

It is not proof that the medium has reached a particular level.

It is the moment when learning begins carrying an additional ethical weight.
