A Common Question
What does Spirit influence mean in trance mediumship?
Answer
Spirit influence refers to the contribution of a Spirit communicator becoming increasingly involved in what is expressed through the medium.
The medium may experience less deliberate direction over speech, thought, or expression while remaining present within the process.
The communicator does not replace the medium.
The medium does not need to become absent for Spirit involvement to become substantial.
Trance is cooperative: two distinct individuals contribute differently within one mediumistic relationship.
Introduction
The word influence can create the wrong picture very quickly.
A communicator influences the medium.
The medium becomes less involved.
Spirit takes over more of what happens.
If carried far enough, the model begins to resemble a transfer of control from one individual to another.
That is not what Spirit influence means here.
Influence Refers to Contribution
Influence concerns what the communicator contributes within the mediumistic relationship.
That contribution becomes humanly expressible through the medium.
The medium remains incarnated.
Speech still requires a human voice.
Language must become expressible through words available to the person.
Movement occurs through the medium’s body.
Concepts enter a human frame through which they can be communicated.
None of this makes the communication merely personal.
Neither does Spirit contribution make the human role irrelevant.
The two should not be treated as competing explanations for the same event.
The Balance of Direction Can Change
In ordinary conversation, a person usually has considerable involvement in deciding what they intend to say and where the conversation will go.
During trance, that familiar direction may recede.
The medium may remain conscious of what is being expressed while having much less sense of deciding what should come next.
A response may begin before the medium has formulated how they would answer.
A subject may unfold in a direction they had not anticipated.
The difference is not necessarily a sudden division between “my thoughts” and “Spirit’s thoughts.”
Nor does every sentence need to be assigned afterward to one individual or the other.
Relationship is rarely that mechanical.
Cooperation Is Not a Transfer
Language such as surrender, takeover, or handing over control suggests that one person must possess the process at a time.
Trance does not require that model.
The medium can become less directive without becoming absent.
The communicator can contribute more substantially without acquiring ownership of the medium.
Cooperation describes the changing relationship more accurately than transfer.
That gives Spirit influence a clearer starting point.
The question is not:
“Who has control now?”
It is:
How is expression unfolding within this relationship, and what degree of ordinary personal direction is still organizing it?
