Trance development unfolds gradually through recognizable phases rather than occurring suddenly.
A Common Question
How can I tell whether I am speaking inspirationally, using mental mediumship, or working in trance?
Answer
Do not begin with how fluent, surprising, profound, or unusual the speech sounded.
Begin with the process.
In inspirational speaking, insight may arise with unusual immediacy, but the speaker remains principally responsible for developing that insight into words.
In mental mediumship, information associated with a Spirit communicator becomes perceptually available to the medium, who consciously decides how to express what has been perceived.
In trance speaking, the Spirit relationship extends more directly into the formation of the speech itself. The medium may remain consciously present while experiencing substantially less ordinary authorship over how the expression develops.
The boundaries are not always obvious during one isolated moment.
What matters more is the recurring structure of the work.
Introduction
Speech can emerge with remarkable ease without being trance.
A person may begin talking about a subject and discover that the ideas arrive faster than expected.
One thought opens naturally into another.
An answer becomes clear before the speaker has consciously worked through how they reached it.
At the end, they may say:
“The words just came.”
That statement can be entirely accurate.
It still does not tell us what process produced the speech.
Inspirational speaking, mental mediumship, and trance speaking can all result in spontaneous, coherent expression.
What separates them is not how impressive the speech sounds.
It is the structure beneath it.
Inspirational speaking refers to expression in which spiritual insight or influence may contribute while the speaker remains principally responsible for forming the words and developing the material.
Mental mediumship involves another Spirit individual whose information becomes perceptually available and is then consciously expressed by the medium.
Trance speaking differs because the medium’s ordinary involvement in constructing and directing the speech itself changes as the communicator contributes through the trance relationship.
The purpose of classification is not to establish which form is more advanced.
It is to describe what is actually occurring.
That requires us first to understand why these forms can look and feel so similar.
