Psychic Perception and Mediumship: Similar Experience, Different Source

Book One: Foundations of Mediumship

A Common Question

What is the difference between psychic perception and mediumship?

Answer

Psychic perception and mediumship may feel surprisingly similar because both can become apparent through familiar forms of human perception.

The distinction lies primarily in source and relationship.

Psychic perception relates to information associated with embodied life, people, circumstances, or the environment and does not require a Spirit communicator.

Mediumship involves a relationship with an individual in Spirit.

Neither is a higher or lower form of development. They are different forms of spiritual perception serving different purposes.

Introduction

One of the first questions many students ask when beginning spiritual development is remarkably simple.

“Am I psychic or am I a medium?”

It seems like an important distinction.

Books separate them.

Courses distinguish them.

Teachers often describe them as different areas of development.

As a result, many people spend considerable time trying to determine which category they belong to.

The distinction does matter.

But perhaps not for the reason we first imagine.

A thought may appear during psychic perception.

A thought may also appear during mediumship.

An image may arise in either.

So may a feeling.

A bodily sensation.

A sudden knowing.

If we judge only by the form in which information appears, the two experiences can seem almost identical.

Chapter Two introduced an important principle:

Familiar form does not establish source.

Chapter Three takes that principle one step further.

The question is no longer simply:

“What did I experience?”

It becomes:

“What is this experience relating to?”

That shift begins to clarify the difference between psychic perception and mediumship.
