Book Three — Evidential Mediumship

Understanding Evidential Mediumship

Book Three: Evidential Mediumship

A Common Question

What is evidential mediumship?

Answer

Evidential mediumship is communication in which information meaningfully supports the identity and individuality of a particular Spirit communicator.

The medium may experience imagery, words, physical sensations, emotional qualities, memories, or other forms of perception. Those experiences become evidential only when what is expressed contributes to identifying the Spirit individual being represented.

Accuracy matters.

Confirmation matters.

But neither should be confused with evidence automatically.

A correct statement about the recipient may be accurate without identifying anyone in Spirit.

Evidential mediumship therefore asks a more exact question:

What does this information actually establish?

Introduction

Book Two ended at a threshold.

The student had learned that mediumistic experience does not need to be manufactured by human effort and that responsible participation requires careful attention to perception, interpretation, expression, feedback, and uncertainty.

Book Three begins when another requirement enters.

Identity must be supported.

There is an important difference between saying:

“I am experiencing an image of a garden.”

and:

“This garden belongs to your mother in Spirit.”

The first describes an experience.

The second identifies an individual and gives the experience a particular source and relationship.

That additional step changes the standard.

A medium may feel completely certain about who is present.

The experience may be vivid.

The communication may unfold easily.

The recipient may feel emotionally moved.

None of these, by themselves, is sufficient to establish the identity being presented.

Evidential mediumship requires information that can be considered by someone other than the medium.

That is why evidence matters.

Not because the medium must prove personal ability.

Not because every sitting should become a demonstration of extraordinary facts.

Evidence creates accountability around identification.

The medium has the experience.

But the medium cannot be the only person capable of deciding what that experience establishes.
