How do I know whether what I am receiving is from Spirit or from my own mind?

Answer

You may not always know immediately.

Mediumistic experience does not arrive through a separate mind that replaces your own. Images, words, sensations, thoughts, emotions, memories, and associations all become known through the human experience you already have.

This means trust cannot depend upon finding one internal feeling that proves source.

Instead, begin with what you can know.

What appeared?

What did you add afterward?

What remains uncertain?

Can you describe the difference honestly?

Trust grows when you become reliable in your relationship with your own experience, even before every question about source has been resolved.

Introduction

One of the first difficulties in mediumship development sounds deceptively simple:

“Was that Spirit, or was that me?”

An image appears.

A name enters the mind.

A physical sensation is noticed.

A phrase arrives unexpectedly.

Then almost immediately another process begins.

“Did I imagine that?”

“Was I thinking about it already?”

“Am I making this fit?”

“Should I say it?”

“Maybe I should wait for something clearer.”

The original experience may have lasted only a moment.

The questioning can continue far longer.

This often leads students to believe that development requires learning how to separate Spirit from the mind completely.

If only the mind would become silent enough, they think, genuine communication would be obvious.

But the mind is not an intruder in mediumship.

The human participant remains involved.

Perception takes human form.

Language is human.

Memory is human.

Association is human.

Interpretation is human.

The real question is not whether the mind is present.

The question is what role it is playing.

That changes the problem considerably.

You do not need to become free of thought before you can participate responsibly.

You need to become more accurate about what actually occurred.
