How Mediums Learn to Recognize Spirit Communication

Learning to Recognize the Real Thing

Perhaps the most frequently asked question from developing mediums is: 'How do I know it's spirit and not just me?' Learning to distinguish genuine spirit communication from your own thoughts, imagination, and wishful thinking is a fundamental skill that develops through practice and experience.

How Spirit Communication Differs from Imagination

Spontaneity: Spirit impressions arrive suddenly and unbidden. Imagination is generated by you. If you're trying to think of something and an answer comes, it's likely yours. If something arrives unexpectedly, it may be spirit.

Quality of Surprise: Genuine spirit communication often surprises you. The information is unexpected, doesn't match your assumptions, and sometimes contradicts what you'd expect.

Placed vs. Generated: Spirit impressions feel 'placed' in your awareness — like someone putting a picture on a table in front of you. Imagination feels generated from within — like you're drawing the picture yourself.

Persistence: Spirit impressions tend to persist even when you try to dismiss them. Your own thoughts drift and change easily.

Emotional Overlay: When spirit communicates personality or emotion, you feel feelings that are distinctly not yours — a sudden warmth, humor, sternness, or sadness that doesn't match your own emotional state.

Developing Discernment

Self-Awareness First: Know your own emotional baseline. When you can recognize your own thoughts and feelings clearly, you can more easily identify when something external is overlaying them.

Practice and Feedback: The fastest way to develop discernment is through practice with feedback. Deliver every impression and learn which ones were accurate. Over time, you'll recognize the feeling quality of genuine communication.

Journal Everything: Write down what you received AND whether it was confirmed. Patterns will emerge that help you identify your most reliable receptive channel.

Accept Imperfection: Even experienced mediums sometimes confuse their own thoughts with spirit. The goal isn't perfection — it's increasing accuracy over time.
